Chinese city rolls out facial-recognition thermometers on buses

The smart thermometers can measure commuters’ temperatures in as fast as a second and alert the driver if an anomaly is detected, the Guangzhou City Transportation Bureau said Tuesday, the Global Times reported.

The devices, which target passengers’ foreheads, are activated when they swipe their transportation cards, according to the news outlet.

The bureau said the data also can be stored in real-time for additional tracking of the passengers, buses and drivers, if necessary.

During the trial period, the devices have been installed on buses on two routes, the Xinhua news agency reported. They are expected to be added to major bus routes and stations.

As of Wednesday, the death toll from the coronavirus exceeded 2,000, with more than 75,000 infected.
